The clinical images are patient data and should never touch an external upload service. The patient-facing ones — a smile gallery on the practice website, a social post — are marketing assets that just need to load fast. Because the two categories have different quality thresholds, the compression setting differs. Clinical images (an intraoral photo used for diagnosis or referral) need to stay sharp and should be compressed conservatively, ideally with metadata stripped. Marketing images can be pushed much harder, since a smile gallery displays at a few hundred pixels wide in a card and nobody inspects the pixels.
